UK-based construction engineering and infrastructure services provider Keltbray has secured an earthworks contract on the Sellafield project.

Sellafield is a former nuclear-power-generating and nuclear-waste-reprocessing site. It comprises more than 1,000 buildings and over 200 nuclear facilities.

A programme and project partners (PPP) model was adopted to help deliver the site’s decommissioning programme.

The PPP model is a 20-year partnership and covers approximately 25 major decommissioning projects.

Keltbray CEO Darren James said: “Working together under this highly innovative enterprise framework will help to create a clean and safe environment at the Sellafield site for future generations, improve sustainability and provide continued support for the local economy and communities.”

The contract is valued at £17m and is said to be one of Keltbray’s first major jobs secured at the Sellafield site in Cumbria.

Under the contract, Keltbray will deliver a development platform in preparation for the follow-on construction of Sellafield’s Lightly Shielded Store 1 (LSS1).

LSS1 is a PPP-led project within the Intermediate Level Waste East Zone.

Additionally, Keltbray will provide a new access road and drainage system to the LSS1 site, as well as temporary utility supplies to the LSS1 construction plot and the adjacent temporary accommodation plot.

Keltbray operations director David Sloyan said: “Through this early engagement, we have been able to consistently prove we can provide working solutions to nuclear industry challenges across the UK, and we will again showcase the capabilities of our fantastic team through this contract with PPP for Sellafield Limited.”
